On to Belgium

I'm finally getting some internet to post pictures and catch up on my (behind) blogs.  When we left Germany after a few days in port for classes, we once again headed down the Kiel Canal. You can see how the locks work a little from this photo.
Mr. Poe joined the people on the deck who enjoyed the views of beautiful countryside.  He also joined the birdwatchers--several rabid ones.
There is a lot of agriculture happening all along the canal, and it seems to be primarily corn which is used for dairy cows.
We were fortunate to have a student who grew up around the Kiel Canal until her high school years when she moved to Florida.  Lana explained some of the differences in cultures. For example, she had never experienced school sports teams until Florida.  She also said the winters were pretty hard.
Swans were everywhere.

As we came to the coast of the Netherlands, we saw the beautiful beaches.

We were also able to see just how much the country is below sea level and how important the dunes are to their well-being.

Did I mention how windy it was?  Wind turbines were everywhere as these countries try to cut back on their nuclear power.  Here are two of the Belgium students, who traveled with us for a week as inter-port students, and Nancy as they try to walk into the wind on the deck.
The sun started to set as we approached Antwerp and as we cruised by a nuclear plant.
